Learn how to backp[ack with Girl Scouts! This backpacking challenge will take you through the preparation activities then to a beginner overnight trip.
Challenge Requirements:
The in-person part will take place at Forbush Flats in Santa Barbara County. The hike will be 1.7 miles to the Forbush Camp. We will filter water from the creek to drink and cook meals on backpacking stoves. To borrow gear, contact marinsigurdson@yahoo.com. Dinner and Breakfast provided. You will be responsible for personal items and snacks.
All participants should do a training hike with their equipment. Your hike should be at least 2 miles and go over hills to give the best practice for the overnight.
If you are signing up as an adult to complete Backpacking Training, you will learn (alongside girl participants) how to go backpacking with your troop. You will be guided on an overnight trip by an experienced backpacker! We recommend signing up for the virtual planning session on 3/20 from 7-9pm to learn the basics you need to plan for your first backpacking trip with your troop.
Please note that Wilderness First Aid training is required when backpacking with girls if you will be further than 30 minutes away from Emergency Medical Services. Check the GSCCC event calendar for Wilderness First Aid training options.
