CANCELED
Council is continuing to respond to the COVID-19 situation, following guidelines set in place by the Department of Health and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Unfortunately because of these circumstances outside of our control we are cancelling all summer day and resident camps that are scheduled through June 30. We have some options for you for refunds and girl support and someone from Girl Scouts of California’s Central Coast should have already reached out to you about this. We appreciate your understanding and cooperation. If you have questions please email info@girlscoutsccc.org.
Join us for Camp Athena, a week-long
resident camp! Girls develop their leadership capabilities while
improving their traditional outdoor skills in a Girl-Led
environment.
Camp Athena is open to all girls in 5th -
12th grade and focuses on developing leadership skills through Outdoor
Education. With adult staff guidance, youth staff members (OWLS) have
worked throughout the year to develop plans for the camp. These
include hiking, backpacking, archery, swimming, and outdoor skills. We
believe that the 11 facets of leadership are best taught in a setting
where outdoor living and outdoor fun are the focus, and the skills
learned are easily applied during daily camp activities.
Camp Athena is a unique experience because unlike most day camps and
Girl Scout camps, Camp Athena is run by girls for girls. A typical day
at Athena may include swimming, sing-alongs, phase pride, legends,
archery, ceremonies, hiking, camp spirit, and much, much more.
What is OWLS?
OWLS (outdoor warrior leadership sisterhood) is a year long program where the youth leaders learn to teach 11 leadership competencies while preparing and executing plans for camp, along with developing other skills in marketing, budgeting, event planning, counseling, etc. To be eligible to be a youth leader, all applicants must have completed 8th grade, be 14 years old by the time of camp, and a Phase Three graduate in addition to being interviewed and accepted into the program. OWLS meet for one weekend a month throughout the year.
What are Phases? Campers are divided into phases by age, camping experience, and maturity. Staffers will make final decisions regarding phase placement after reviewing each registration form and camper at the mandatory May Orientation Day. All 3 phases focus on learning leadership and outdoor skills. Completions of previous phases are not required for entrance into any phase.
What is Phase 1? Group/Patrol Leader Introduction Phase 1 is for girls entering grade level 5th – 6th grade; no camping experience is necessary. Girls will experience the dynamics and power of a close-knit patrol. They are exposed to the responsibilities of group and patrol membership as well as leadership skills. There will be one overnight backpacking trip between 2-4 miles.
What is Phase 2? Group/Patrol Leader Development Phase 2 is for girls entering grade level 7th-8th grade; camping experience and outdoor skills are desirable, but not necessary. Their training will assist them in becoming a leader of small groups. Participants are exposed to advanced levels of leadership competencies and are given guided opportunities to lead a group/patrol. There will be one overnight backpacking trip between 6-10 miles.
